Congenital Chromatics

In this design studio we will explore innate performances and congenital chromatics through a series of design projects. The design tasks vary in scale and will increase in geometric complexity incrementally.

We will start the semester off with a series of workshops for software, experimental model building and material studies. This period will culminate in a small exhibition and presentations.
Based on the initial tryouts and experiments, we will split into groups which will focus on special topics in depth during the rest of the semester. The focus groups are: structural, environmental, interactive, formal and material.

The main design task will be to design an immersive space that functions as an interface between architecture, geometry, space and inhabitant. The focus will lie on making the invisible defining performances of the shape visible, resulting in intricate articulations which are playful, colourful and performative.

This design studio we take colourful inspirations from nature, analyse their form and function and try to understand what lies beneath the visible surfaces. We will then take this analysis and apply it intuitively and informatively to generate new forms and articulations. Consequently we will use a series of case studies to quickly create a complex design proposal for an exciting waiting area. We will digitally analyse and simulate conditions of the tectonic elements, the environments and the users’ interaction with architecture and map this back onto the design. This step will be an iterative workflow where we mine inert information out of existing results to generate new versions. The last step will be a culmination of all previous tasks, resulting in an architectural scale model, material tests, animations, renderings and projections.
