Students are able to illustrate individual sections of the Austrian political system. They acquire in-depth knowledge in these sections and are able to individually work in other sections.
The focus of the seminar is on party communication and political communication in Austria. The seminar deals with theories of party competition and discusses how Austrian parties apply them. This includes issue-based party competition (e.g. positional competition and saliency theory), negative campaigning and personalization. We will read and discuss current research on party competition with a special focus on Austria. Students will carry out a basic content analysis during the 2019 general elections to test some of the theories discussed in the seminar.
Students will read and prepare texts that form the basis of lectures and discussions in class. In addition, participants have the opportunity to conduct a basic manual content analysis.
The assessment includes:
1) regular attendance and participation,
2) two written exams
3) Coding
4) Essay
Readings will be announced.
positive completion of the module according to § 5 Para 1 No 1 and of the modules according to § 5 Para 1 No 2, 3, 6
