Students acquire the ability to deal with fundamentals of empirical studies. They understand to allocate the most important qualitative and quantitative survey methods to the respective scientific-theoretical and methodological background and chose the necessary methods for each research question. They are able to deal with current empirical studies and to apply the first steps of a research process (formulation of a research issue, data collection, method reflection) autonomously in terms of quality and/or quantity or method.
Short description: This course gives an overview of qualitative and quantitative research methods in the social sciences. Students learn basic concepts and approaches in each method and its scientific backgrounds. Learning targets: - Understand how to link theoretical concepts and empirical research - Become acquainted with the practical research process (specifying a research question, choosing an adequate research design, collecting, analyzing and interpreting data). - Be able to collect data using standard research methods (surveys, interviews, observations, focus groups).
