Students will be able to grasp and explain theories of and analyses regarding the emergence and transformation of social institutions – especially politics, markets, and civil society. They will be able to analyze the workings of and reciprocal relations between these institutions in society.  Students will be familiar with key debates, concepts, and methodological approaches in the social sciences, regarding the analysis of markets, state, and social institutions and organizations.

This seminar provides an introduction to the sociology of law and the institutions of jurisprudence at national, supranational and international levels. Students get to know central theories and modern problems of legal sociology. In addition to selected classics of legal sociology such as Eugen Ehrlich (pioneer of legal pluralism), Nikolaus Luhmann (systems theory of legal sociology) and Gunther Teubner (transnational legal and constitutional pluralism), the focus will be on the political sociology of human rights (Nash), globalisation and law, as well as the tension between democracy and legal pluralism.
