The module provides an overview of the main topics and current research issues of a special sociology (e.g. sociology of consumption, urban sociology). Students learn about the development of the respective research field and key theoretical concepts and perspectives in the context of the broader sociological tradition. Students can evaluate and discuss the relevance and importance of sociological perspectives and interpretative-qualitative, cultural sociological research approaches in the context of these research fields. They are able to compare and evaluate positions within the debates in these fields of knowledge. Students are encouraged to apply the insights gained to other contexts and to develop new research questions.

This seminar deals with sociological studies and contemporary debates on the 'crisis' of housing, which manifests particularly in urban and metropolitan contexts. Based on political economy analyses of the production of (sub-)urban space and the tension between the commodification of housing and the use-value of housing we will dissect the various crisis tendencies and their consequences, first with respect to psychosocial dimensions and the reproduction of intimate and familial relations, second with respect to social inequality and socio-political dimensions. We will discuss the variety and change of housing and forms of settlement as well as approaches in housing policy and provision.
