By the end of the course, students are able to successfully use vital skills and methods of English communication (see below) in a business context.

The most important chapters comprise:

* Study skills (efficient self-study techniques, time management, stress management, …)

* Contact management (networking, persuading, convincing)

* Setting priorities and goals

* Formulating strengths and weaknesses

* Giving feedback

* Efficient behavior in groups (moderation / facilitation)

* Successful presentation techniques

* Self-presentation (curriculum vitae, strategies for job interviews)

The business context comprises principles of economics, business administration along with internal and external communication in business.

Teaching methods:

Students are systematically integrated into business-related communication situations and learn to improve and refine their English (language) skills in authentic contexts. They have the possibility to measure and evaluate their individual learning progress through personal goal-setting.

Active participation in class is regarded the most central aspect and is achieved through discussions, presentations, group work, moderated meetings, simulations and case studies. In-class participation is complemented by self-study assignments. In this respect, the internet represents the most important tool for improving individual deficiencies in language competence, acquiring new information and creating the theoretical foundations of communication skills.

An "Internet Manual" compiled by the students (including summaries and a collection of links) is made available to and discussed with other students in the forum and results in an internet database for course-related topics and training sites. Additionally, students work out a semester project, i.e. a training session for specific (communicative) skills.

Assessment

Continuous assessment of performance in class, the students' progress journal, the "Internet Manual" along with the skills-related semester project are used to evaluate the student's performance. Regular attendance is mandatory

The course is based on the manual "Skills in Context", which will be distributed in class at the beginning of the semester.
