Students will

- read, discuss, and questions readings classified as "classics" or "canon" in German educational discourse;

- learn to read academic texts as document of its time, learn what let to this kind of thinking and arguing, and learn to limit its reach;

- start to compare German traditions to non-German speaking traditions.

The course aims at introducing students to the so called classic readings ("canon") in German speaking educational science. By reading we will scritunize ideas, scope and aim of the readings and interpret it as part of discourse in time. Interpretive understandings will help us to understand why we still consider some writings on education / education science as "classics" and part of the canon of our academic discipline and others not.

Material: novels, films, music, caricatures

Please be aware that this course is "prüfungsimmanent", which means that your presence during course times is required!

For examination,

- you'll have to hand in readings notes on the readings during the course (40%);

- you take part in discussions in class, in group activities, in bringing in questions (30%);

- you either hand in a 5-7pp paper OR you you present on one of the classics tackled in class (30%).
