Methodical approaches and overview of Viennese Popular Theatre

Research on Viennese “Vorstadttheater” in the second half of the 19th century and after Nestroy’s death, is one of the most pressing desiderata within Literature and Theatre Studies. The course will provide an overview of Viennese popular theatre, nowadays unknown playwrights, such as Friedrich Kaiser, Anton Langer, O. F. Berg, Alois Berla or Karl Morré as well as questions of genre and the functions of entertainment theatre. The focus will lie on Ludwig Anzengruber’s socially critical plays and his position as “Reformator des Volksstücks”.
