Methodically supported, text-oriented interpretation of selected texts; ability to identify and to describe the relation between social, literary and cultural history

The seminar discusses the development of Austrian literature and the literary field after 1945: We will see that Austrian literature iniatially followed conservative and restorative tendencies and denied its compicity with regard to the holocaust. A new generation of writers, however, started to introduce new, highly provocative literary forms and contents, allowing for an Austrian avantgarde. During the seminar, we will analyse literary texts and deal with fundamental cultural debates (Adorno, Arendt). Morover, we will visit an exhibition in the Stadtmuseum Hall (the seminar teacher is one of its curators) and discuss this form of historical remembrance.
