discussion of a complex novel work and its diverse context

Thomas Mann's 1924 novel ‘Der Zauberberg’ is one of the masterpieces of literary modernism. Located in the secluded world of a sanatorium in the mountains, a variety of modern themes and problem constellations are discussed. In the seminar we want to develop the multilayered text successively together and treat central aspects such as illness and time, love and death, but also knowledge, ideas and media history as well as narrative methods and constellation of figures.
