Knowledge about theories and recent methods of linguistic research on the topic "language and violence", ability to critically analyse language (use)

The phenomenon of violence is manifold in that it is associated with different causes, functions and evaluations that can all be viewed from a scientific viewpoint. "Language and violence" is also an ambiguous pairing. Structures of violence are established in, with, by, despite, because of and at language. In this lecture we will look at some areas of this network from a linguistic viewpoint, for example:

• Verbal aggression: cursing, ranting, insulting, directives, impoliteness
• Language of power: language politics and ideologies, institutional violence, medical communication
• Violence in the media
• Discourses of violence and gender
