winter semester 2019/2020 | Last update: 11.02.2020 | Place course on memo listStudents will be made familiar with the history of anglophone Irish literature, with special focus on the 20thcentury. They will be encouraged to reflect on the relations between literary developments and socio-political contexts. They will enhance their ability to analyze, contextualize and discuss literary works from different periods and genres.
The lecture is an introduction to the history of anglophone Irish literature, with special focus on the 20thcentury. The first part will give brief introductions to the work of significant authors (mainly anglo-Irish) of the 18thand 19thcentury (e.g. Jonathan Swift, Laurence Sterne, Maria Edgeworth, Oscar Wilde). The longer second part will survey the role of literature (especially drama) in constructions of national identity in the 20th/21stcenturies.
Presentation, group work, discussion
Each slot will feature a lecture of ca. 70 minutes and a partner work/discussion period where we apply the contents of the lecture to a concrete example. Please be prepared to do some reading at home (excerpts).
Written exam (on the contents of the lecture) and oral exam (on the core reading list)

The lecture "VO English Literature and Culture (mit Leseliste)“ can be attended as the lecture "VO American Literature and Culture II” with an additional reading list. If you wish to obtain credits for both lectures, the lectures’ contents must differ substantially.Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
