This course is supposed to help students to consolidate their knowledge about English literary history, to get a grasp of the 'bigger picture'. Students will get help in comprehending genres and epochs and in performing analyses of texts – skills that are essential for oral reading list exams.

This course complements the lecture "Irish Literature" and helps students in their preparation for the oral reading list exam (MA and diploma, but also BA). There will be the opportunity to take a closer look at texts and genres that were introduced in the lecture. Moreover, periods and genres that are not addressed in the lecture will be discussed here. We will discuss methods for the analysis of poetry, prose and drama, so students can train the application of these methods to the texts on their lists. We will also discuss strategies for preparing for oral exams. The precise curriculum of this course will be tailored to the needs of those attending, so please be prepared to give some input on your questions, problems and interests in the first session!
