609405 SE Linguistics and Culture: Language ideology in discourse on English
winter semester 2019/2020 | Last update: 11.07.2019 | Place course on memo listThe students participating in this seminar will acquire critical views on the role of langauge as a marker of social identity through the study of discourse practics that connect langauge with social and cultural values, thereby conveying ideologies of discrimination.
The seminar will review some concepts of sociolinguistics and will ecnourage participants to analyse linguistic and folk-linguistic texts, with the aim of uncovering the ideologies they represent.
Illustration of concepts and categories, presentation of examples. Group discussions and individual research reports.
Students are required to attend regularly; presence at the first session, in particular, is mandatory. Other requirements for positive assessment are: language proficiency adequate to the 2nd Abschnitt level, active participation in discussions, regular reporting on research progress, a 30-min presentation (with handout) and a written research paper (stylesheet for linguistics available on Institute’s website.
