After attending this course, participants will be able to define, historicize, and contextualize key concepts of mountain / film / studies as pertaining to American mountain film and culture.

From Mount Rushmore to Yosemite Valley, mountains have figured prominently in the cultural construction of the American nation. Mountains have also been a popular playground for U.S. alpinists and filmmakers.

This course offers an introduction into the emerging field of mountain / film / studies within the context of American culture. It studies dominant discourses, prevailing aesthetic frameworks, and narrative techniques in the current visions of mountains. Analysing documentaries, docudramas, drama, survival and adventure films as well as magazines and promotional documents, this course approaches mountain film across genres and across various forms and formats of cultural representations.

Students enrolled in this course are required do attend the 46th AAAS Conference 'Mediating Mountains' being held in Innsbruck from November 22 to 24.

They are also expected to bring an object which they associate with mountains to the first session on October 7. This object can be anything from a postcard to a piton. The important thing is that participants are able to explain their connection to mountains through their objects.

Lecture inputs, weekly viewings/readings, student presentations, group discussions.

Active class participation, student presentations, writing assignments and/or term paper.

As far as possible, course materials and selected primary and secondary sources will be posted on OLAT.
