The seminar looks into the Spanish-speaking modern poetry of Latin America. We will look at the epoch of modernity in the Spanish-speaking regions of the American continent, as well as the second half of the 20th century and a few examples of contemporary Latin American poetry. We will analyse poems by J.L. Borges as well as those by César Vallejo, Pablo Neruda, Juan Gelman and Alejandra Pizarnik. We will discuss poems by Octavio Paz as well as by Oliverio Girondo, Alfonsina Storni and Sergio Raimondi. What are the connections between the different authors? Which themes, forms and metaphors return? As introduction, we will read texts on theory of poetry and talk about different kinds of interpreting a poem.
Lecture; text analysis; discussion.
Course readings; active participation in discussions; written exam at the end of the term.
A reader will be provided at the beginning of the term.
We start at the beginning of the semester.
Students can absolve the oral reading list exam (literary studies, Spanish) connected to this teaching session.
If you intend to write your senior thesis (BA) in this teaching session, please let me know until the end of the second week of the winter term. Deadline for submission of a senior thesis in winter term 2019 is the 15th of september 2020.
