Specialised knowlege regarding theories and types of intermediality; specialised knowledge regarding intermedial phenomena in different Romance literatures and cultures of different epochs (with a focus on the modern and contemporary era); ability to critically reflect theories and phenomena related to intermediality.

The course is dedicated to the concept and research era of "intermediality", i.e. to cultural phenomena that involve at least two different media (such as literature, film, arts). We speak of "intermediality" when these media are not only combined but integrated and result in a new cultural phenomenon in which the different media forms are entangled, interact and create new meanings. In the first part of the course we will have a close look at different theories and concepts of intermedialiy. In the second part of the course we will study a series of case studies from the Romance cultures that reflect different types of intermediality such as filmic writing in literature, filmic adaptions of literary texts, literary references to the fine arts or intermedality in performance.
