Overview of the discussion of Latin American identities; Knowledge of important texts about political and cultural identity of Latin America; knowledge of terms such as "criollismo", "mestizaje", hybridity

The aim of this learning session is to give an overview about the discussion of the "own", of the "identity" constructon in Latin America - often in dissociation to the US or Europe, in selected texts on the subject. We will read texts by Garcilaso de la Vega el Inca as well as by Simón Bolívar, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, José Enrique Rodó, Octavio Paz and José Lezama Lima. The main focus lies on retracing the development of this discussion in time, but also to recognize typical "identity characteristics" in the construction of the "own" of Latin America.
