613091 PS Perspectives from history of translation
winter semester 2019/2020 | Last update: 21.06.2023 | Place course on memo listIn recent decades, the history of translation has turned into a dynamic field of research within translation studies. It enables us to take a closer look at those transfer and transformation processes and their supporting actors that on the one hand determine the perception of linguistic, cultural, academic or national identities and borders in the first place and on the other hand form the preconditions for the questioning, dissolution and reorientation of social and cultural structures. The aim of the course is to become familiar with the fields of work and problems of historically oriented translation studies through the reading and analysis of selected texts.
- The following topics and aspects will primarily be discussed:
- the links between translation and national identity;
- the links between translation and cultural standards (e.g. for the formation of national literatures);
- the study and clarification of changes in the practices and 'cultures' of translation and the self-conception of translators: How can such processes and the factors influencing them (e.g. norms) be made tangible?
- Reading and analysis of texts, concepts and texts in translation studies in which social, cultural and intellectual influences on the practice of translation are developed.
- The following must be provided:
- an oral presentation and a written term paper
- General interest in issues of translation studies
- Willingness to deal with theoretical texts
Before completing the entrance and orientation phase of studies (StEOP), students may enrol for courses comprising a maximum of 30 ECTS.
The course is an optional subject aimed at bachelor's students and master's students.
Electronic registration via the online study programme is compulsory for participation in the course.
