To master and independently apply art-historical methods on examples referred to in the lecture.

The seminar deals with terms such as "Arts and Crafts", "Jugendstil", "Bauhaus", "Art déco", "Radical Design", "Memphis Group" or "Postmodernism" and asks the question: What is design? The seminar introduces important designers such as William Morris, Ettore Sottsass, Alessandro Mendini, Philipp Starck or the ideas of Steve Jobs and provides a contemporary and easy-to-understand overview of the history and theory of design over the last 150 years using striking examples ranging from the Thonet chair to the iPhone. Not only icons, but also everyday objects (typewriters, ballpoint pens, shopping trolleys) will be taken into account, combining interdisciplinary approaches in aesthetics, technology, the social sciences, history and society. The focus will be on critical-analytical design theory and design culture, with particular attention to the social and economic functions and mechanisms of design.
