Acquisition of skills for dealing with historic sources and studies critically, as well as the competence to present the newly-gained knowledge verbally and/or in writing; Acquisition of the competence to apply methods of auxiliary sciences.

One of the central goals of Zionism - the Jewish National Movement - was to understand and explore the Land of Israel through science. The basic assumption of this course is that science was the tool, through which the Zionist movement sought to fulfill itself. During the semester we will read sources and analyze central aspects of today's Israel through the prism of different scientific trends such as: sociology, history, archaeology, architecture, botany, medicine etc.

Reading, oral presentations with handout, seminar paper, discussion; teacher's lecture.

Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, regular and active participation in discussions (oral and written), oral presentation with handout, seminar paper (max. 5 pages).

Reading list will be provided.
