Acquisition of basic skills for dealing with historic sources and presentations of Contemporary History as well as skills in presenting the newly acquired knowledge orally as well as in writing. Acquisition of basic knowledge and application of relevant methods aiding scientific research.

The development of Holocaust research will be dealt with based on specific problems and significant examples. Possible topics include: functions and limits of historicization, debates on singularity and comparability, prohibition of images and representation, language in Holocaust research, identification of victims and perpetrators, intentionalism vs. functionalism/structuralism, perpetrator research, academics and public, photographs as sources. Different developments in various countries will also be considered. By doing so, a problem-oriented introduction to the history of the Holocaust will simultaneously be given.

Oral presentations and handout, paper, discussion; exercises; teacher's lecture.

Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, active participation in discussions, final paper. 

Guided research of pertinent literature will be part of the expected tasks.

Due to substantial differences in the allocation of ECTS-Credits in various curricula (teacher training programs/specialized degree programs), the requirements for this course vary. Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
