The acquisition of basic skills in dealing with ancient sources and in composing a paper.

This seminar will give an overview of the developments of urban centres in the centuries between roughly 300 and 600 AD. It will compare local distinctive changes with "global" phenomena, providing the range of possibilities in urban development that characterizes the transition from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. The main questions to answer will be: What would an antique city have looked like? Which factors led to changes in urban centres? Which societal developments can we deduce from changing cities? What would a medieval city look like? Which modern conceptions frame our understanding of urbanity in this time of transition?

The seminar is designed for any students that are interested in political and societal changes and how they affect the image of a city in a historical perspective.

Combination of lecture, reading tasks and guided reading, exercises, short presentations and group work.

Written paper, exercises, participation during the course.

Relevant literature will be announced during the course.
