winter semester 2019/2020 | Last update: 14.09.2023 | Place course on memo listUsing the example of Pharaonic Egypt, the course will introduce the use of archaeological results and findings as a source of historical science.
An overview of the historical and methodological development of (Egyptian) archaeology will be part of the lecture. This explicitly includes both the archaeological process from the excavation itself to the interpretation of objects. In addition to the importance of the archaeological context for all findings, the difference between labeled objects and non-labeled material culture should be discussed. On the basis of individual case studies, various problems, such as the handling of old excavations and the difference to modern excavations will be exemplarily demonstrated.
In addition, various types of archaeological projects will be shown, especially the difference between settlement archeology and funeral archeology.
