Ancient historiography often focuses on ancient cities. Cities mark important points in matters of political history. Greek and Latin historiography mirror examples of intensive siege, clever defence and conquest. Beyond that, the texts record the perception of the importance of cities, of its inhabitants and at least its conquerors. Common reading and the analysis of prominent city sieges (e.g. Babylon, Tyre, and Carthage) offer a survey on ancient historiography and its methods of description from the 5th c. BC to the 5th c. AD and give an insight into the recent urban studies.
There will be communications on selected topics to be chosen. A discussion will follow on every talk working out the main aspects and presenting the results in detail.
