Concentrating on thirteen texts from different genres, epochs and cultures, students will gain a first impression of the immense variety of literary texts and gain awareness of the texts’ situatedness in their respective historical context and their transnational impact on literature and intellectual history.

Reading and discussing selected works of world literature, we will sketch the publication context and the history of translation and explore the characteristics of each text and their impact, and the specificities of various genres. We will discuss the formation of canons and specifically the selection of the texts for this class. The course ends with a written exam.

Extensive readings of primary texts in preparation for each session; short written responses to the readings; close readings of selected excerpts in class; plenary discussions; work in small groups.
