645201 SE Bachelor Thesis Austrian History: Austrian History as Entangled History
winter semester 2019/2020 | Last update: 07.10.2019 | Place course on memo listEnlarged perspective on entangled history, skills in writing of longer historical treatises (wording, reasoning and defending of arguments) on the basis of a selected topic of Austrian entangled history as well as the presentation of the newly acquired knowledge.
Austrian history had been written as a close history of its own for a very long time. This concentration was very typical für the nineteenth century, but also for the time after 1945, when Austria tried to generate a special Austrian identity in the aftermath of its nationalsocialistic past. This close perspective changed a bit in the 1990s, when at least the connection between Austria and the Holy Roman Empire was taken into account.
The approach of entangled history - histoire croisée - focuses instead the connections, influences and transfers over the borders of regions or countries. This is far closer to historical situations than an artificial closure.
This means that in the seminar ALL topics of interest can be dealt with - as long as the entanglement over the Austrian borders with all impacts are considered.
In a first step, we will discuss the theory of entangled history and then find some possible topics for the Bachelor's thesis together.
The seminar assists and supports the Bachelor's Thesis regarding working skills and content. Short lectures, reading and discussing of articles, use of OLAT.
Course with continuous assessment: regular attendance of the sessions, exercises, active participation in discussions, oral presentations, written concept and Bachelor's Thesis (about 30 pages).
Will be announced in the lessons.
Online-enrollment required.
