645205 VO Region and History: The Ottoman Empire

This is a broad survey of Ottoman history from the origins in the 1300s to the foundation of the Turkish Republic. The weekly lectures will cover a diverse selection of themes, but the topics that will be specifically highlighted in the first two-thirds of the semester are the expansion of the Ottomans into the Balkans, the origins and development of the relations with the Habsburg Monarchy including a specific lecture about the coming of the second siege of Vienna in 1683, role of women in Ottoman politics and society, conditions of Christians and Jews and the Ottoman methods of governing non-Muslims. The last one-third of the course will begin with Ottoman modernization within the broader framework of westernization in the Middle East. We will also explore the Ottoman reform and modernization program known as Tanzimat and the developments during the turbulent regime of Abdulhamid II whose legacy is vigorously debated in modern Turkey to this day. The course will end with a discussion of the politics during WWI.
