The students can ask a clearly formulated and well defined research question; they can independently analyze this question and present the result of their research in a scientific manner; they can refute critical remarks with good arguments or they can constructively use those remarks and finally write a scientific essay.

The course focusses on the field of Reforms in the Habsburg Monarchy during the 18th century. History of political thoughts will be part of discussion as well as the political reform agenda (from Charles VI to Joseph II) and the reactions of society. A central part of the course will be a broad discussion of steps to unify the territory (territorialisation / centralisation); as is mirrored for example in cartography and in the changes of spatial imaginations.
