In 1918, Franz Mehring, Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht, published a systematic biography of Karl Marx for the first time (www.mlwerke.de/fm).
In the years of the Weimar Republic, historian Gustav Mayer, who was persecuted by the Nazi regime, worked on a great biography of Friedrich Engels.
In Moscow, after the October Revolution of 1917, David Rjazanov began work on a first historical-critical edition of the works of Marx and Engels (MEGA).
On the basis of these and other examples, the history of the exploration of the work of socialist "classics" beginning after the death of Karl Marx (1883) and Friedrich Engels (1895) will be presented.
