Students of this course will learn methods for programming the most important classes of parallel computers with shared and distributed memory as well as aquire basic knowledge in the area of parallel computing. To that end, the most important programming model, Message Passing Interface (MPI) will be used. Students will be able to analyse and find parallel solutions that are implemented as parallel programs for modern parallel computers.

Introduction to the most important basic concepts of parallel computing, types and properties of parallel computers, performance metrics such as speedup and efficiency, programming in MPI, data dependence analysis in order to identify opportunities for parallelism, work and data distribution, optimization of sequential and parallel programs

Basic concepts are presented on slides and discussed with interspersed practical code examples.
