This practical course is intended to prepare students for lab work in the framework of a bachelor thesis. After completing this course, students are expected to be able to conduct basic experiments in the laboratory.

Based on the „Plant Physiology“ lectures this practical course provides an experimental approach to primary and secondary plant metabolism and plant stress response.

Experiments will be conducted in the laboratory, including work with basic laboratory equipment and tools.

Mainly spectrophotometry (e.g., colorimetric assays) and dyeing techniques; HPLC (demonstration), it will be practised how to make up solutions.

Written and oral exams.

As a preparation to the practical course theoretical knowledge can be acquired:

“Botanik - Die umfassende Biologie der Pflanzen” by Ulrich Lüttge, Manfred Kluge and Gerhard Thiel

“Plant Physiology” by Lincoln Taiz and Eduardo Zeiger

A practical guide will be provided containing detailed step-by-step protocols for the measurements.

Compulsory modules 7 and 9 must have been passed.

Please bring your lab coat; a pocket calculator will be useful.
