Students will develop the ability to engage in critical comparison of historical and current-day representations of demons and means of exorcism.
Demons play an important role in the gospels. They also appear in modern pop culture. Demons, possession, and exorcism will be studied by means of both historical-critical exegesis and the empirical study of religion. Both Christian and non-Christian practices will be considered. Each session will include antique and modern perspectives. There have always been "demons", but what to do about them?
