800710 VU Introduction to sustainable groundwater resources management
winter semester 2019/2020 | Last update: 04.05.2020 | Place course on memo listAt the end of the module, students are able:
- to understand the mainproblems related to groundwater resources management
- to understand the basic principles behind hydrogeological modeling
- to analyse the sustainability of actual usage of groundwater resources
- to develop sustainable strategies to manage the case studies presented in the lecture.
The first part of the lecture will focus on the presentation of actual problems in groundwater resources management (soil subsidence, saltwater intrusion in costal aquifers, soil salt crust formation, depletion of non-renewable groundwater resources, contamination) through the presentation of relevant case studies.
The second part of the lecture will provide a brief introduction about how grounwater modeling can contribute in finding a sustainable management practice for the exploitation of groundwater resources.
- Presentation of the case studies
- Discussion of the case studies with the students
- Groundwater modeling exercise
- Group discussion about possible solutions for the case studies
- Presentation of the students.
