Analysis and critique of complex philosophical arguments, overview over new trends in the debate; developing a coherent position of one`s own; respect for diverging positions on an existentially important and sensitive issue.

A person hooked up to a pleasure machine may live a happy life, but also a meaningful one? Is the meaning of life to be found in morat virtue, self improvment, love of others, intimate relationsship with god, in pursuing a certain life plan? Is there an objective general answer or is the meaning of life different for different persons? Is talk about the meaning of life perhaps itself meaningless? After all, we exist only for a short timein an presumably infinite universe. Moreover, human existence seems to be an almost endless circle of disappointment, suffering and boredom: Is not, therefore, every human effort absurd?

Joint analysis of philosophical texts; (re)construction and critique of arguments; (according to the number of participants). groupwork; "debating society" formats: short presentations (e.g. science slam style).

Texts will range from Kohelet, Aristotle to Kant, Schopenhauer, Tolstoy, Camus and analytic philosophy (via OLAT).
