Curr. § 5 Para 2 No 1:

Students have advanced knowledge in selected theoretical society models. They understand to apply these models in analysing selected social issues. They are able to determine the pos-sibilities of recognition in the context of social-theoretical models and conditional recogni-tion limits within appropriate theoretical, methodical and empirical arguments and to critical-ly evaluate relevant current socio-theoretical discussions.

The seminar will discuss theories of social change and their explanatory power by analyzing phenomena of recent societies. It is concentrated on five theories of change: civilization theory, system theories, the theories of Foucault and Bourdieu and the new theory of development. The emergence of a world society with its new civil standards as well as its wars and violent conflicts will be put into the spotlight. The dilemma of modern developmental policies will be addressed, too. How refugees are treated und the rise of new rightist movements will be explained by the theories of social change.
