Students have advanced knowledge in selected theoretical society models. They understand to apply these models in analysing selected social issues. They are able to determine the pos-sibilities of recognition in the context of social-theoretical models and conditional recogni-tion limits within appropriate theoretical, methodical and empirical arguments and to critical-ly evaluate relevant current socio-theoretical discussions.
The course focusses on reading, discussing and presenting sociological concepts concerned with societal transformation in course of religious diversification and secularisation. We learn about different kinds of religious transformation processes, including those related to migration, individualisation and secularisation. Students get familiar with a variety of conceptual approaches from both micro- and macro sociological perspectives. Students will work with basic texts in the field and deepen their knowledge through group research on specific topics.

Reading of basic texts and active in-class participation are required to pass the course. In addition, students have to fulfil the following tasks:
1. Text work on basic texts (2 tasks á 20 %)
Prior to each course session, students will be given small tasks in relation to the mandatory readings, e.g. writing an abstract or answering questions in written form.
2. Presentation in class and handout (30 %)
Students will give in-class presentations on their group research results on a migration issue of their choice and provide a handout.
3. Term paper (30%)
Students summarize their learning results in a term paper.
