By the end of this course students will have developed three key business communication skills in English: managing yourself, data analysis and information transfer.
The course offers the following: managing yourself (personal goal setting, progress assessment, language learning techniques), data analysis (collection and interpretation of data) and information transfer (effective power point presentation of economics trends, applied persuasion techniques and effective writing on business topics for an audience).
At the beginning of the course each student is required to evaluate their own skills in business English and to set personal goals for the semester. In discussions and role plays based on current business topics discussed in specialist newspapers and magazines, we practise the skills demanded in modern business. The students learn both to formulate arguments and to express their own views, along with reprsenting and defending team conclusions. In so doing, their self-confidence and communicative competence in English will be developed. As the course progresses, participants speak to increasingly larger groups while at the same time constantly improving the precision of their messages. Oral work in class is supported by weekly writing in OLAT journals and the discussion forum.
Continuous assessment of the class participation and progress, along with several short written assignments, weekly participation in the OLAT discussion forum, weekly reading of business reports and writing of reviews.
The course manual Communication in Business along with personally selected background reading.
