To deal with literary texts reflecting on the methodology and to develop a well-founded understanding of literary texts using meaningful examples
In works written around 1800 madness plays a central role. Medicine and enlightened pycho-medicine had determined how closely reason and madness border on each other. Writers became increasingly interested in figures who due to their internal disposition deviated from the norms of their community. The texts in question reflect the mechanisms of social exclusion (exclusion of madness), but also early forms of conversational therapy and drama therapy, which aspired to cure the madness by the means of language. Through close reading of selected texts we will make sense of variously accentuated literary answers to an epochal topic.
