This course is designed to help students acquire a sound basis of Canadian literature and to develop and refine their research and academic communication skills.

“We haven’t got an identity until someone tells our story,” said Canadian novelist and poet Robert Kroetsch and emphasized that “fiction makes us real” (Kroetsch 1986 [1970]: 30). This compact course provides an introduction to the stories that have made Canada. It focuses on Anglophone literature, and more broadly on acts of representation, and discusses topics such as indigeneity, exploration and travel, migration, gender and writing as well as nature and urban life. The syllabus texts will be studied both for their unique features in terms of the national literature and for their place in a larger Anglo-American context. Thematic discussions are paired with workshops on research and writing, supporting students in developing and refining their academic skills.
