622010 PS Contemporary History: East-South Relations: The "Third World" and the "Eastern Bloc"
summer semester 2020 | Last update: 27.02.2020 | Place course on memo listAcquisition of basic competences in dealing with historical sources and representations on Contemporary History and/or the 20th and 21st century as well as the ability to present the newly-acquired knowledge in oral and/or written form.
In the 20th century, various relations developed between ‘East’ and ‘South’ on different ideological bases, from socialist internationalism to anti-colonialism to pragmatic trade interests. In this course we will deal with exchange relations, alliances and tensions between states of the global South (Asia, Africa, Latin America) and the communist states, drawing on secondary literature and selected primary sources. Themes to be discussed include economic relations, development policy, ideology transfers and forms of labour migration and educational mobility.
Interactive learning process: Oral presentations, discussions, written paper.
Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, active participation in discussions, oral presentation and handout, final paper (10 pages).
Literature/reading-list will be discussed in class.
