Dealing with historical sources and research literature; application of methods from auxiliary sciences of history; oral and written presentation; critical discussion

The popes of the High and Late Renaissance still stimulate the imagination today. Legendary stories of intrigues and debaucheries at their court are popular themes for books, films and television series. Even apart from these aspects, the first half of the 16th century was a time of setting the course for the institution of the Papacy. Its greatest splendour fell in these decades as well as the beginning of the Reformation, and thus the greatest challenge to its position of power.

In the proseminar we will look at the role of the popes and the Roman curia in this period of upheaval using selected highlights.

Reading and discussion of sources and secondary literature; thematic presentations; group work

Regular and active participation; oral presentation; written final paper
