645208 PS Austrian History: Language policy in schools from Maria Theresia to the Second Austrian Republic
summer semester 2020 | Last update: 19.06.2020 | Place course on memo listAcquisition of skills in scientific research methods (concerning scientific literature as well as primary sources); awareness of methodological approaches; training for participation in ongoing scientific discourse and in didactically suitable forms of presenting results of research, consolidation of historical knowledge about the mentioned period of time and its specific problems.
Even before the enactment of the Basic Law of 1867, and in particular Article 19, numerous efforts have been made by the legislative power to provide guidelines for multi-ethnic and accordingly multilingual coexistence in the Habsburg Monarchy. Starting with the Maria Theresia school reforms through the decay of Austria-Hungary till the initial phase of the Second Republic impact and implementation of school policy measures are illustrated by exemplary case studies. Within the framework of this proseminar, an attempt will be made to highlight the differences in interpretation and implementation of various legislations in the school sector of Cisleithania and later Austria.
Brief introduction to the subject; reading and analyzing scientific essays and historical sources in class; oral presentation(s) and written paper.
The students are expected to take actively part in discussions, present their own topics and hand in a paper.
Basic literature will be announced in the course; research of further specific literature is part of the students' tasks.
