The students get an overview of the relevant concepts, theories and methods in the field of the Social History of Medicine and can use the newly acquired skills for their own research topics. 

The lecture deals with topics of medicine in peripheral spaces: folk medicine (laypersons) and their healing knowledge, traditional remedies and medical plants, practitioners and surgeons, midwives and maternity homes, infectious diseases and vaccination, poor houses and hospitals.

 

Introduction into the basics of the social history of medicine and health; discussion of application examples; practical exercises; oral and written presentations.

Continuous assessment, regular and active participation in discussions, participation in the workshop, written contribution (term paper).

To be announced in the course. 

It is planed to organize a one-day excursion to the "Ötztal Museum" in Längenfeld, where term papers will be presented and discussed.
