800704 AG Study Group: Identity Politics
summer semester 2020 | Last update: 09.06.2020 | Place course on memo listIntroduction to the study of social movements in the twentieth century, identity politics and critiques of identity politics
Identity Politics means to define – and at best organise – oneself as Afro-American, Jew, Woman, Lesbian or Worker for example. Although this form of emancipatory Identity Politics is the foundation of countless social movements like feminism, it was questioned not only by universalism but also by queer and postcolonial theory.
What are the problems, which forms of exclusions and essentializations do exist? And could the critique of minorities, however, strengthen democracy?
