Deepening of the designing and creative skills in urban and architectural design in the context of a research for new settlements in the post-pandemic era.

Topic: “Dune city"

New settlements in the post-pandemic era.

The actual pandemic situation has brought the domestic space to the forefront of the architectural discussion. Housing has become an essential place where people have been secluded leaving the public space complete empty. During the lockdown we have moved all our activities inside, causing a daily readjustment. The redefinition of limits, uses and functions of the interior of our houses has become a point of conflict in which, on many occasions, the solutions have not been simple. We have subjected the home to a situation of functional and utilitarian stress, using it as a school, office, health center, gym, game room or cinema, in addition to the tasks of the domestic sphere such as cooking, sleeping, resting, or cleaning ourselves. Is the end of public space? Is it the triumph of individuality over collectivity? Is the city obsolete? Is it a matter of density?

Maybe it's time to look for more ephemeral and mutable situations as intrinsic attribute of a new kind of urban settlement, the dune city. A dune is a deposit of material in continuous change that mutates and grows while reproduces specific set of morphologies. Digital architecture seems to play an important role on this conception due his intrinsic definition of geometry as a state of becoming.

In this course we will explore the possibility of a topological definition of the urban fabric. Bolonia, Cadiz (Spain) will be our speculative laboratory. Bolonia is a fishing village, it's an archaeological site, it's beach, it's dune, it's "flysch", it's cows, it's tourists,... This amalgamation of things unveil  a very convoluted place.  Complexity emerges from social, phenomenological, programmatic and, especially, formal aspects.

First task will be an urban exercise where students will use the place as a formal catalog for topologies that can produce new urban or rural tissues in this place. Topology as an opposition to the classical typological understanding of the city. Modeling and MASH networks techniques will be introduced to the students. This will be a group work.

Once this new tissue is done there will be a second and more specific task in relation to it. Student will have to explore the possibilities of one element as a domestic space. Not any domestic space but the phobic house. In this time of confinement, the inhabitants have become permanent users of the limited domestic space, also developing psychological affectations derived from coexistence, little contact with the outside and the limitation of movements. Students will individually select a phobia around which the new home will be developed.
