SE Seminar for Doctoral Students: Key Texts in Theoretical Philosophy

This class aims to acquaint students with some key texts in Theoretical Philosophy. On the basis of the texts, students will learn to conduct a systematic philosophical investigation on topics such as: knowledge and understanding (Epistemology); skepticism and self–knowledge (Epistemology and Philosophy of Mind); aesthetic value judgments (Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art); theory of meaning (Philosophy of Language).

We will read and discuss together the following classical texts in Theoretical Philosophy:
1.    Plato: Menon (excerpt)
2.    Aristoteles: De interpretatione, Kap. 9
3.    Aurelius Augustinus: Confessiones (excerpt)
4.    René Descartes: Meditationen (excerpt)
5.    John Locke: An essay concerning human understanding (excerpt)
6.    Arthur Schopenhauer: The world as will and representation (excerpt)
7.    Immanuel Kant: What is enlightenment?
8.    David Hume: On the standard of taste
9.    Gottlob Frege: Meaning and Reference
10.    Donald Davidson: Truth and Meaning
11.    Willard Van Orman Quine: On empirically equivalent Systems oft he world
12.    Hilary Putnam: Meaning and Reference

Text reading, student presentations and discussions.

Short presentation (40%), Essay (60%).
