Familiarity with the ways in which social and political factors influence academic or scientific thought. The ability to think critically about these topics in connection with students' own research projects.

Some argue that academic or scientific knowledge can be had independently of political and moral factors. Others argue, however, that *all* of our epistemic practices are politically or socially "motivated". In this class students will engage critically with these two opposing views. We will explore the extent to which our epistemic practices are influenced by social and political structures, and the extent to which such influence is problematic or desirable.

This topic is important for anyone working on an academic or scientific project, particularly doctoral students from any discipline. Participants from philosophy as well as any other are welcome.
