To become acquainted with the theology of Augustine by studying selected original texts - especially regarding his theology of grace.

Augustine is the first theologian to write his own books on theology of mercy, in fact many of them, although he has gone through a long development in which the conflict with Pelagius started relatively late. At the time of this conflict Augustine had already worked out a specific theology of grace, whereby the discussion of Paul’s biblical texts as well as personal experiences had a great influence. Like no other, he had shaped the Christian doctrine of grace. Indeed Augustine’s theology of grace is also closely interwoven with highly problemati ideas regarding original and predestination, which cast their shadows to the present day.

You will get to know important texts of Augustine on his theology of grace, work on interpretations that allow to accept Augustin's achievements without necessarily falling into aporias regarding original sin predestination. You will get introductions from the course leader; You will work on selected texts, give presentations and will discuss them. Finally, you write a seminar paper on a sub-topic and you will receive feedback on the content.

Written and oral.
