Knowledge of the Christian understanding of the concept of dignity and some other understandings of human rights and dignity in the contextual process of ethical decision making.

We want to consider the deeper theoretical and theological foundations of Human Rights, particularly the idea of Human Dignity which is claimed to serve both as a foundation of international and European human rights, as also of Catholic social teaching. The concept of human dignity plays an important role not in providing an agreed content in human rights but contributing to particular methods of human rights interpretation: Dignity, Person and Imago Trinitatis; Human Dignity and the Image of God; Revelation, Law and Human Dignity; Human Dignity and Human Worth are the themes that will lead the first part of the seminar. Practical considerations of the concept of dignity will also be discussed: dignity and marriage, dignity and the duty to protect unborn life, dignity and religious freedom, dignity and choice, dignity and poverty. These applications bring to light the tensions between some understandings of human rights and dignity and some religious understandings of what constitutes the common good.
